"Indicators" of Public Influence? Noah Greenberg, and Michael Morrow

I have been having a look on the Genome site on the BBC which lists past programmes of all kinds. As my search words I have used Noah Greenberg, and Michael Morrow. Both these chaps were great pioneers in the propogation of Early Music to the public. However, David Munrow seems to have won hands down.....as the amount of public recordings completely outstrips them...

It should be stressed though that in the case of Noah Greenberg who mainly worked in the US that there may be more substantial listings of his public recording productions at specific American media outlets of the 1950s, and early 1960s.

PS Also, Thomas Binkley has only two pages on the BBC Genome. This is revealed in the following link

'THE PLAY OF DANIEL'

A gramophone record of a twelfth-century music drama
The New York Pro Musica
Directed by Noah Greenberg
Presented by Denis Stevens
PART 1
Part 2: tomorrow at 10.30
The original manuscript of the music for this play is in the British Museum and was transcribed for this performance by Fr. Rembert Weakland , O.S.B., and scored for voices and instruments by Noah Greenberg. The music has a pulse, a rhythmic vitality that lends to basically straightforward tunes an air of freshness and fascination; it shows us that the Middle Ages, far from being dark, were light enough to create what is virtually light music, even though its subject is the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den and the final judgment on his persecutors.

    Renaissance Dance Music from Italy

From a Renaissance Entertainment given at a public concert in the Queen Elizabeth Hall , London, in 1969 by MUSICA RESERVATA director MICHAEL MORROW conductor JOHN BECKETT
Michael Morrow writes: 'With few exceptions this music forms part of a repertory that was largely international. The instrumental dances, as well as most of the vocal pieces, are arrangements of popular songs rather than original compositions.'
The instruments, which include lutes, rebecs and various wind, all belong to the period.

Italian music of the 14th century was essentially a secular, a renaissance, art. Its master-pieces are miniature ones: song settings of the fixed verse forms, in which the vocal parts often demand considerable virtuosity. The subjects of the verse reflect most aspects of the leisured life: hunting, fishing, love-making, moralising.
No instruments are expressly called for in the manuscripts, but we know from contemporary literature, painting, and sculpture that these songs were commonly performed with instrumental accompaniment and sometimes by instruments alone. One of the rare collections of purely instrumental music of the time contains keyboard settings of several Italian songs, and two of these settings will be heard in today's programme.

Plainsong and the Rise of European Music

Ars Antiqua Secular Motets Devised and introduced by Basil Lam
These motets, based on fragments of plainsong or popular melodies, come from the vast repertoire which nourished around Paris mostly in the 13th century. They may be regarded as the earliest chamber music; and different though they are from the Renaissance church motets, they show highly developed and subtle techniques in the combining of melodies. This Week's Comoosers

    The Court of Henry VIII
A gifted amateur himself, the young Henry brought to the English court a new emphasis on musical entertainment: lavish ' disguisings ' and ' mavings ' became favourite diversions, enriching the repertoryofsongsanddancesand severely depleting the privy purse.
With one exception, all five programmes this week dwell on this secular aspect of Henrv's musical life. sustained as it was by the work of several composers - among them William Cornyshe Robert Fayrfax and. to some extent, the monarch himself.

    Comments

    1. Genome is a really amazing resource and has been really really useful for my research into the medieval music revival. One thing I have noticed though, is that sometimes the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) doesn't work so brilliantly, so it might be that there are more references than you think. It does seem to me though that David Munrow was a much more outward facing personality than Michael Morrow, so that could be one reason. And Binkley's records were not so well known in the UK and his group only played here very rarely. This would account for his limited presence on the airwaves I imagine.
